EDA’s Conference Deemed a Success!

We were thrilled to host our first conference and welcome local Eastbourne consumer facing businesses on 20th October at the View Hotel.

The event featured experts talking about ways in which businesses can incorporate inclusivity and the benefits of being inclusive. We had a variety of contributors sharing their knowledge including Directors of EDA, Kelvin Grimes from sponsor Clos-O-Mat, and Lorraine Gailey, CEO of Hearing Link, Lee Price from the University of Brighton, Gaynor Sadlo from our Toilets Matter initiative, new member Assist-Mi and Matt Huddart from The View Hotel, which provided wonderful hosting.

Eastbourne Designed for All works towards encouraging businesses in Eastbourne to meet local consumers’ needs more effectively. Projects so far include an Inclusive Design Checklist, which allows businesses to self-assess how well they are meeting their consumers’ needs. EDA has also introduced a community toilet scheme in Eastbourne which encourages businesses to open their toilets to all members of the public- even if they’re not a customer.

Our first conference was designed to explore differing aspects of customer exclusion through expert’s eyes, highlighting steps businesses can take to improve the experience of shopping and leisure for residents and visitors; whilst gaining new customers and sales.

Thank you again to our sponsors who made our conference possible by their contributions: The View Hotel, Clos-O-Mat and all of our speakers.

We’d also like to thank all the businesses that came to the conference. It was great to see local businesses supporting inclusivity.

“When you consider the scale and diversity of the obstacles to “normal” life faced by so many consumers, it makes sense for businesses to set their stalls out to personalise service and welcome everyone entering their premises as a valued customer. We were delighted with the mix of speakers and audience attending.” Tom Serpell, EDA Director
